Why Your Cat Needs Cat Grass: Fun, Healthy, and Easy to Grow!
Why Cat Grass is a Must for Every Feline
After my recent adventures in homemade cat food and cat-shaped furniture dreams (yes, that’s a thing in my imagination), it’s time to talk about something every cat lover should know: cat grass. No, not catnip, but the simple, unassuming cat grass. While it might not send your cat into a playful frenzy like catnip does, cat grass is an underrated superstar in the world of feline care.
So, why is cat grass so great for cats? Let’s break it down:
- Aids Digestion: Cat grass acts like a natural fiber, helping to move hairballs through your cat’s digestive system. Perfect for those times when your furball over-grooms!
- Essential Nutrients: It’s packed with nutrients like folic acid, which helps with oxygen transport in your cat’s blood. Who knew chewing on grass could be so healthy?
- Natural Cleanser: Cats might munch on it to cleanse their systems. Sometimes, cats eat grass and then throw up, which helps them eliminate non-digestible items like fur.
Turning Your Apartment into a Mini Cat Jungle
Now, if your cat is anything like my Tito (aka my little cow disguised as a cat), you’ll know that indoor cats sometimes miss out on the greenery that outdoor felines enjoy. That’s why growing cat grass in your apartment is the perfect solution! It’s easy, healthy, and let’s face it, it adds a cute touch of nature to your living space. Plus, your cat will think you’re the best for giving them their own little snack garden.
Here’s how I did it, and trust me, if I can, you can too!
Growing Cat Grass is Super Simple
I had this idea while wandering through a flea market one sunny afternoon. Among all the quirky items, I found a big, cheap basket that screamed, “Turn me into a cat grass paradise!” So, naturally, I accepted the challenge.
What You Need:
- A basket (or any plant container of your choice, really)
- A plastic bag to line the basket (no one wants soil everywhere!)
- Some soil
- A pack of cat grass seeds (super easy to find at any pet store or online)
The Growing Process:
- I lined the basket with a plastic bag to avoid any soil leakage (because soil on the floor? No, thanks!).
- Filled it with soil – you don’t need much, just enough to cover the bottom of the basket.
- Sprinkled the cat grass seeds generously over the soil and sprinkled some soil to cover it.
- Gave it a little water and placed the basket on my terrace that cats have no access.
Within 8-10 days, the grass had sprouted beautifully, and Tito was all over it. It was ready for cat consumption! Honestly, growing cat grass is easier than keeping houseplants alive, and your cats will appreciate it way more than a cactus. Tito couldn’t wait to dig in, and watching him snack on it was pure joy.
Why Your Cats Will Love It
Let me tell you, if you’ve got a cat (or three), they’re going to LOVE cat grass. It’s not only a fun snack for them, but it’s healthy too. And here’s the best part – all cats seem to go wild for it! Even if your cat is picky about food (looking at you, Myratz), they’re likely to enjoy nibbling on the fresh green blades.
It’s also great for keeping them entertained. If your cats are like mine and live indoors, they’ll enjoy having something new and natural to interact with. It’s a small thing that can make a big difference in their day-to-day routine.
Bonus Project: DIY Cat Grass Garden
If you want to take it up a notch, why not create a small DIY cat grass garden? Use different sized pots or containers and fill them with a variety of grasses and plants safe for cats. Not only will it keep your cat entertained, but it will also give your home a fresh, green vibe. Plus, it’s an easy way to add a bit of nature to your apartment, especially if you don’t have outdoor space.
A Heartfelt Call for Help: Support SOS Cat Rescue
Now, before I wrap this up, I have to take a moment as a true cat lover to call your attention to a very important cause. There’s an amazing cat rescue organization I follow, SOS Cat Rescue Croatia, that is doing fantastic work for stray and feral cats. They’ve been helping cats in need for over 10 years, and now they need your help.
Their current fundraiser is focused on raising money for veterinarian care, vaccinations, and food for the cats. They also rescue and help other animals like birds, squirrels, and even dogs. It’s truly heartwarming to see their efforts, but they can’t do it alone.
Here’s how you can help:
👉 Donate to SOS Cat Rescue Croatia on WhyDonate.com. Every little bit helps, especially as we head into winter when these animals need all the warmth and care they can get.
