Cat Ladies Calendar: A Purrfect Blend of Catloving and Photography

Step into the world of the "Cat Ladies" calendar, a unique fundraising project that combined photography and feline charm to help a cat rescue pay off veterinary bills.

Why Calendars Still Matter

It’s October – the cozy season of crunchy leaves, hot tea, and the quiet panic of realizing the year is almost over. Companies everywhere are racing to prep their branded planners, mugs, and yes, those good old-fashioned calendars. Now, I know what you’re thinking. Calendars? In 2024? Aren’t we all just shouting “Hey Siri!” or glancing at our smartwatches? But hear me out.

There’s something magical about flipping through a calendar, month by month. Tangible. Tactile. Real. And for some of us – especially the feline fanatics among us – it’s more than just keeping track of time. It’s storytelling. It’s inspiration. It’s community.

The Cat Ladies Calendar isn’t just about dates – it’s a love letter to cat lovers, wrapped in whiskers and framed in photography. And for one cat rescue organization I worked with, creating their own calendar was not just a fun side project. It became a lifeline. A way to raise funds, share stories, and showcase the human-cat connection that turns casual cat people into lifelong advocates (and occasional Instagram-famous “cat ladies”).

The Backstory: A Furry Fundraiser

Flashback to 2013. Picture this: me and a few fellow cat-loving warriors, knee-deep in fur, rescue missions, and mounting veterinary bills. We were broke, stressed, and determined not to let any whiskered soul go without care. The goal? Start the new year with our paws clean – no debts, just dreams.

But how were we going to raise enough funds in time? Bake sale? Too crumby. Raffle? Meh. Then it hit me like a cat pouncing on a dangling shoelace – we could make a calendar. Not just any calendar, mind you. A Cat Ladies Calendar. It would be quirky, fun, heartwarming, and – bonus – I already had the tools.

As a photographer with a flair for catching the magic in everyday moments (and cat whiskers), and a background in graphic design, this was my jam. I could shoot, design, and bring to life a visual celebration of the bond between fierce, fabulous women and their feline companions. We didn’t have a big budget, but we had big hearts, cameras, and a cause that mattered. And that, my friend, was more than enough to get started.

The Concept: Lavish Ladies and Camera-Shy Cats

The concept? Deliciously simple – on paper, at least. Invite the cat ladies over, dress them up in all their fabulous, over-the-top glory, and capture them in glamorous, vintage-inspired portraits alongside their feline companions. Think pearls, feathers, velvet robes, and a whole lot of attitude. Oh, and of course – the true headliners of the show: the legendary Cats Magazine cats. The stars with tails. The purring divas. The reason this whole Cat Ladies Calendar existed in the first place.

“Easy peasy,” we said. Ha! Oh, how naïve we were.

Because here’s the truth: while the ladies were absolute pros – posing with elegance, sipping tea in elbow-length gloves, tossing side-eyes like Hollywood icons—the cats had other plans. Some decided the chandelier was more interesting than the camera. Others vanished entirely the moment the first sequin rustled. One glorious floof even took a nap in the middle of a set and refused to move, forcing us to shoot around him like he was some feline Marlon Brando.

We quickly realized we weren’t just creating a calendar. We were producing a full-on theatrical experience starring a dozen unscripted furry co-stars, each with their own diva-level demands. And honestly? That chaos made the whole thing even more magical.

The Photoshoot Fiasco: When Cats Play Diva

Ah, the big day. The lights were set, costumes were fluffed, coffee was strong, and our glamour squad – aka the cat ladies – were ready for their moment. But the cats? Oh no. The cats were not having it.

Even my usually sociable, purr-happy Pierre – queen of head boops and warm laps – suddenly acted like she’d never seen a camera in her life. She gave me a look that said, “Darling, I’m off-duty today.” One by one, the cats turned into uncooperative, slinky enigmas. Some hid under furniture. Others staged dramatic exits mid-pose. One fluffy renegade even managed to climb onto a shelf and knock off a prop with all the casual defiance of a seasoned diva.

So, what do you do when your stars go rogue?

You pause. You breathe. And you declare an emergency food siesta. (Trust me, food solves at least 83% of life’s problems.) While we humans munched on snacks, the cats enjoyed some treats, a whiff of catnip, and a good ol’ regrouping nap.

And magically, as the room filled with the smell of coffee, laughter, and the occasional rustling of treat bags, the vibe shifted. Little by little, the feline divas emerged – tails high, eyes bright, and finally ready for their close-ups. I was still juggling lighting, lenses, and the occasional escaped model, but someone had to play the role of the responsible adult while creating the ultimate Cat Ladies Calendar. Spoiler alert: that someone was me, wearing a beret, holding a camera, and quietly questioning my life choices while giggling uncontrollably.

The Final Cut: Choosing the Fabulous Twelve

With the last shutter click, you’d think our mission was complete – but oh no, darling. That’s when the real marathon began. Sorting through hundreds of images, each more delightfully chaotic than the last, we had to narrow it down to just twelve final shots. Twelve! Out of all those dazzling humans, dramatic cats, and accidental masterpieces, we had to choose the perfect monthly muses for our debut Cat Ladies Calendar.

It was like judging a beauty pageant where half the contestants had fur and zero interest in winning. Some photos were out because of blinks, sneezes, or tails mid-swish. Others were just too fabulous to ignore. I spent hours glued to my screen, editing with the intensity of a cat stalking a laser dot – adjusting colors, retouching backgrounds, and ensuring each image radiated exactly the right amount of elegance-meets-eccentricity.

Then came the hunt for a printer. Thankfully, a friend swooped in with a recommendation, and like a matchmaking miracle, we found a print service that totally got our vibe – bold, quirky, and unapologetically cat-centric.

And just like that – after weeks of concepting, styling, herding cats (literally), editing, and printing – the 2014 Cat Ladies Calendar was born. When that first printed box arrived, we held our breath. We opened it. We gasped. And then we exhaled in unison, a collective phew! echoing through the house like a sigh from the universe saying, “You did it, crazy cat people. You really did it.”

The Outcome: A New Year, A Clean Slate

And just like that – cat hair, chaos, and all – the calendar was a hit! Not only did we sell out our first run, but we also raised enough money to clear the rescue’s veterinary bills. We started the new year not just with a clean slate, but with a deep sense of accomplishment and community. It was wild. It was exhausting. It was so worth it.

That whole adventure taught me something timeless: with a pinch of creativity, a sprinkle of stubbornness, and a generous heap of cat fur, you can turn even the fluffiest idea into a real-world solution. The Cat Ladies Calendar wasn’t just a quirky fundraising gimmick. It was a celebration of compassion, an art project fueled by love, and proof that outdated doesn’t mean obsolete – it means tangible, touchable, and human.

So, the next time you find yourself rolling your eyes at a wall calendar in a world ruled by apps and smart devices, pause for a moment. Behind that glossy paper might be a story of rescue, resilience, and roaring creativity. For us, it wasn’t just a calendar – it was a canvas for storytelling, a platform for philanthropy, and most importantly, a lifeline for our furry friends.

And who knows? The Cat Ladies Calendar might just claw its way back in the coming years – grander, glitzier, and with even more fabulous fur. Keep your paws crossed – and your wall space open.
