How Stray Cats Changed My Life and How You Can Help Them

Moving from City Life to a Feral Cat Haven

Back in the summer of 2010, we packed up our cozy apartment in the city center and moved to a house in a nearby village. It was a big change – I had only experienced house life during visits to my grandparents. Little did I know, this move would introduce me to a new, furry world.

At the time, we had two spoiled indoor cats, both rescued from tough beginnings. They lived their best lives, lounging around like royalty. I naively thought our backyard would remain their exclusive domain, never imagining stray cats would take over my heart and home.

The Stray Cat Invasion

One day, a scruffy, cautious little cat appeared in our backyard. Then another, and another, until I had a full-fledged feline fan club. As a certified cat lover, my instincts kicked in – I started putting out water and food for these unexpected visitors. But it didn’t stop there; I quickly realized the importance of spaying and neutering to prevent even more homeless kittens.

Once wild, hungry and very sick (FeLV – feline leukemia and FIV – feline AIDS), Payo lived with us his best eight years.

Of course, catching feral cats wasn’t exactly a walk in the park. These weren’t friendly house cats; they were wary, clever, and had zero trust in humans. I sought help from a local cat rescue organization, who kindly assisted me with humane traps and advice. Together, we managed to spay and neuter the strays and ensure they had a healthier, safer life.

Very wild, Lolly was very distrustful. After two years of companionship, he lived with us as a senior.

Winter Worries: Creating a Warm Refuge

When winter arrived, my heart ached for these resilient cats braving the cold. My garage transformed into a feline shelter – complete with cozy boxes, blankets, food, and water. A small window stayed open so they could come and go as they pleased. Watching them snuggle up in their makeshift haven was heartwarming.

Over the eight years we lived there, our backyard became a little sanctuary. Two feral moms even gave birth in our garage! We managed to rehome most of the cats and kittens, though three – Myrtaz, Tito, and Pierre – decided to stay and became part of our family.

The Joy and Challenges of Helping Stray Cats

Helping stray cats wasn’t always easy. Some ferals remained wild and elusive for years, while others eventually warmed up to me. Their daily antics in the garden brought endless joy. They’d chase each other, play silly games, and even leave me “gifts” – usually in the form of dead mice or, once, a snake!

Rehoming cats was bittersweet. I was thrilled to see them find loving families, but losing some to illness or old age broke my heart. Each cat left a pawprint on my soul, and I’ll always remember their unique personalities.

Why Stray Cats Deserve Our Help

Stray cats remind me that every living being deserves kindness and care. These cats didn’t ask to be homeless – they’re survivors in a world that often overlooks them. They deserve a chance to live, thrive, and share this planet with us.

If you ever spot a stray or feral cat in your neighborhood, consider helping them. Start small: provide food, water, and shelter. If you can, reach out to local rescues to discuss spaying and neutering. Even the smallest effort can make a big difference in their lives.

My Parting Wish: Help Stray Cats Thrive

As I reflect on my years helping stray cats, I realize how much they’ve enriched my life. Their resilience, quirks, and love taught me lessons I’ll carry forever. If you have a stray cat story, cherish it. And if you don’t, perhaps this is your sign to create one.

So, kiss your cats on their adorable little foreheads, and if you can, extend a helping paw to those less fortunate. Together, we can make the world a kinder place for stray cats and all living creatures.
