TNR – Trap Neuter Return: How I Became a Cat Rescuer (And You Can Too!)

TNR - Trap Neuter Return is the most humane way to control feral cat populations. Let me tell you my journey - how I went from a cat whisperer to a full-blown cat rescuer, trapping clever tomcats and saving lives. Want to help cats in your area? Keep reading!

Trap Neuter Return and How I Became a Cat Rescuer

Fifteen years ago, I believed my connection with cats was unshakable. Any size, any color, any temperament – I was their person. But then we moved to a village, and I met my match: a colony of feral cats who wanted absolutely nothing to do with me.

I tried everything. Sitting quietly, offering food bribes, even pretending to ignore them – nothing worked. For months, they stayed a solid ten tail-lengths away, watching me like I was the intruder (which, to be fair, I was).

That’s when I discovered TNR – Trap, Neuter, Return, the gold standard for helping feral cats and controlling their population humanely. But before I could help them, I needed one crucial tool: a humane cat trap.

Trap Neuter Return

The First Cat Trap: A Wild Ride

I wouldn’t have even known where to start if it wasn’t for a friend of mine. She founded a cat rescue organization and now – had been doing Trap Neuter Return for years. She pushed me to get involved, and before I knew it, I was on a mission.

I reached out for donations – traps, gloves, carriers, and whatever else could help. Thanks to SNIP International (a big thank you Lisette Cartier van Dissel!), a fantastic organization dedicated to supporting humane animal control, I managed to secure humane cat traps, gloves, and other essential equipment from the UK. Their generosity made a huge difference!

Sounds easy, right? Well, it wasn’t.

The Great Trap Delivery Disaster

So, with my mind set on helping these cats, I did what any determined cat person would do: I ordered humane cat traps. The plan was simple – receive the traps, set them up, and finally take the first real step in this Trap Neuter Return mission.

What could possibly go wrong?

Well, everything.

When the package finally arrived in Croatia, the delivery service had a special surprise for me. Instead of ringing my doorbell or leaving a polite delivery note, they took a creative approach – scattering my boxes all over the lawn like an avant-garde installation piece. No phone call, no message, just pure, unfiltered chaos.

At first, I thought a storm had hit. Boxes were flung in random directions, some upside down, others sitting precariously on my front steps like abandoned luggage. For a moment, I half expected a stray cat to pop out, having taken up residence in one of them.

But hey, at least I had the traps! Step one of my Trap Neuter Return journey was officially complete.

Now, onto the hard part: actually catching the cats.

My First Feral Cat Rescue: The Moment It Clicked

I set up my first trap with a mix of excitement and anxiety. Would it work? Would I end up trapping a raccoon instead? (Spoiler: No raccoons, just one very surprised feral cat.)

The first cat I trapped was feral, hissing, and clearly not thrilled. But I followed the Trap Neuter Return process:

  • Trap the cat safely
  • Take them to the vet for neutering/spaying & vaccinations
  • Return them back to their colony

It worked perfectly. And before I knew it, I was doing it again. And again.

Then, something unexpected happened.

Trap Neuter Return

The Feral Cat That Became My Best Friend

One of the tomcats I trapped was a fighter. He had battle scars, a rough attitude, and the biggest cat ego I had ever seen. But after his neutering and return, something changed.

He started hanging around. Then, he let me pet him. Then, one day, he walked into my house and never left.

That once-wild street cat didn’t just survive – he thrived. Over time, he transformed from a fierce, independent street king into a content and spoiled indoor companion. And when we moved 1,400 kilometers, there was no question – he was coming with us.

Watching his transformation was nothing short of incredible. A cat who once ruled the streets, wary of humans and fiercely self-reliant, now curled up on soft blankets, demanding head scratches on his own terms. He was living proof of how patience, trust, and care can change a cat’s life.

I named him Lolly, and his journey from the streets to a loving home reinforced everything I had learned about Trap Neuter Return (TNR) – a method that gives feral cats a chance at a safer life, whether they remain outdoors or, in rare cases like his, find a forever home.

Lolly’s story is one I’ll share in full soon, because his journey deserves to be told.

Why TNR – Trap Neuter Return Works

I know some people are against TNR, but here’s the truth:

Ignoring feral cats doesn’t make them disappear.
Removing them doesn’t work – they just repopulate.
TNR is the only humane solution.

By trapping, neutering, and returning, we:

  • Prevent endless cycles of kittens (one unspayed cat can have 180+ kittens in her lifetime!)
  • Reduce cat fights and injuries (neutered males don’t fight for mates)
  • Improve their health (vaccinations & vet checks prevent disease)
  • Help the community (no yowling, spraying, fighting, or cat overpopulation)

It’s a win-win for everyone – including the cats.

How You Can Start Trap Neuter Return in Your Area

If you have feral cats in your neighborhood, you can help them!

  • Step 1: Get a humane cat trap. (You can find one on Amazon or check with local shelters and rescues – they might have one to lend.)
  • Step 2: Learn the process. (Ask a rescue for guidance.)
  • Step 3: Work with a vet. (Many offer low-cost neutering for feral cats.)
  • Step 4: Return the cat safely back into their colony.

You don’t need superpowers to help cats – just a little patience, a trap, and a love for animals.

Trap Neuter Return Changed My Life

What started as a simple act of helping a few stray cats turned into one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life.

Trap Neuter Return doesn’t just save cats – it connects people, builds communities, and gives you a new sense of purpose. In Japan, they call this “ikigai” – the thing that gives your life meaning.

So, if you’ve ever looked at a feral cat and thought, “Someone should help them” – guess what? That someone could be you.
