Trap Neuter Return and How I Became a Cat Rescuer
Fifteen years ago, I thought I had an unbreakable bond with cats. Any size, any color, any mood – I was their person. Then, I met my match: a group of feral cats that wanted nothing to do with me.
I tried everything. Sitting quietly, bribing with food, pretending to ignore them – nothing worked. They stayed ten tail’s length away for months.
And that’s when I learned about TNR – Trap Neuter Return, the gold standard for helping feral cats. But first, I needed a humane cat trap.

The First Cat Trap: A Wild Ride
I wouldn’t have even known where to start if it wasn’t for a friend of mine. She founded a cat rescue organization and now – had been doing TNR for years. She pushed me to get involved, and before I knew it, I was on a mission.
I reached out for donations – traps, gloves, carriers, and whatever else could help. Thanks to SNIP International (a big thank you Lisette Cartier van Dissel!), a fantastic organization dedicated to supporting humane animal control, I managed to secure humane cat traps, gloves, and other essential equipment from the UK. Their generosity made a huge difference!
Sounds easy, right? Well, it wasn’t.

The Great Trap Delivery Disaster
When the package finally arrived in Croatia, the delivery service had a special surprise for me. Instead of ringing my doorbell, they dumped the boxes on my lawn – scattered everywhere. No message, no phone call, just chaos.
But hey, at least I had the traps! Step one complete.

My First Feral Cat Rescue: The Moment It Clicked
I set up my first trap with a mix of excitement and anxiety. Would it work? Would I end up trapping a raccoon instead? (Spoiler: No raccoons, just one very surprised tomcat.)
The first cat I trapped was feral, hissing, and clearly not thrilled. But I followed the TNR process:
- Trap the cat safely
- Take them to the vet for neutering/spaying & vaccinations
- Return them back to their colony
It worked perfectly. And before I knew it, I was doing it again. And again.
Then, something unexpected happened.

The Feral Cat That Became My Best Friend
One of the tomcats I trapped was a fighter. He had battle scars, a rough attitude, and the biggest cat ego I had ever seen. But after his neutering and return, something changed.
He started hanging around. Then, he let me pet him. Then, one day, he walked into my house and never left.
That wild street cat became my indoor companion, and when I moved to Luxembourg, he came with me. From a tough street king to a pampered house cat – his transformation was incredible.

Why TNR – Trap Neuter Return Works
I know some people are against TNR, but here’s the truth:
❌ Ignoring feral cats doesn’t make them disappear.
❌ Removing them doesn’t work – they just repopulate.
✅ TNR is the only humane solution.
By trapping, neutering, and returning, we:
- Prevent endless cycles of kittens (one unspayed cat can have 180+ kittens in her lifetime!)
- Reduce cat fights and injuries (neutered males don’t fight for mates)
- Improve their health (vaccinations & vet checks prevent disease)
- Help the community (no yowling, spraying, fighting, or cat overpopulation)
It’s a win-win for everyone – including the cats.
How You Can Start TNR in Your Area
If you have feral cats in your neighborhood, you can help them!
- Step 1: Get a humane cat trap. (You can find one on Amazon or check with local shelters and rescues – they might have one to lend.)
- Step 2: Learn the process. (Ask a rescue for guidance.)
- Step 3: Work with a vet. (Many offer low-cost neutering for feral cats.)
- Step 4: Return the cat safely back into their colony.
You don’t need superpowers to help cats – just a little patience, a trap, and a love for animals.

Trap Neuter Return Changed My Life
What started as a simple act of helping a few stray cats turned into one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life.
TNR doesn’t just save cats – it connects people, builds communities, and gives you a new sense of purpose. In Japan, they call this “ikigai” – the thing that gives your life meaning.
So, if you’ve ever looked at a feral cat and thought, “Someone should help them” – guess what? That someone could be you.
